My inspiration for this set began one day while doing laundry.ย I was tackling the dreaded task of putting away clothes and while hanging husband’s work clothes, I came across his belt.ย I thought, huh.. how cute would it be if this little metal piece was a heart instead.
And from there the fireworks sparked off.ย I always find it funny how inspiration can strike from such a mundane task.
Perhaps I should do the laundry more often?ย ๐คฃ
I knew I wanted a set and that we were in need of a pair of denim capris because for some wild reason, they have completely evaded me these past 3 years.ย A cute tube top to pair nicely with the capris would suffice. I took the heart idea I had and applied that to the belt, the cuffs of the capris and used it to bind the tube top in place. I was laying in bed when the idea started to come together visually in my mind.ย So of course, I had to get up at 4 am and sketch it out before I lost itย ๐คฃ.
As usual, I didn’t stick entirely to my first idea. I considered having a cut out heart in the capris, but I shall save that for another time.ย I loved the idea of having a belt loosely wrap around the waist without the need for belt loops.ย I personally have no time to be fiddling with belt loops and don’t want to fiddle with them this time either!
Then I came across this reference and I was sold to pursue this idea.
I took off to Blender and started sketching out a sloppy rough draft of how I would like the geometry.ย I always start out making the big forms and then adding in detail and chopping up where I need to on one side.ย Once I’m happy with it, I will create the other side and “solidify” the mesh.ย Sometimes I go about this process differently, it just depends on the project, but for this I chose to just solidify.ย It took me a minute to figure out how I was going to do the belt, but it was all coming together nicely!

Once I have my materials and my plan sketched out, it was on to my absolute favorite part of the creating process… sculpting the high polygon model! (Okay so maybe it’s my 2nd favorite part of the creating process… if we’re being honest, I think my favorite part is when it’s all said and done lol)
The process I usually take for myself when it comes to creating (and many creators have their own workflows that work for them) is to begin sculpting in the wrinkles and large forms and then adding more detail as necessary.ย I save putting in the seams for where the clothes will be sewn til the very end of the project. You can see below where I started and how over time I added more and moved on to other parts of the capris.
Putting in the wrinkles
I started to get brave and move towards sculpting out the back pockets and began putting wrinkles on the belt.
And finally I added all the finer details along the seams and carved in where I would want the seams to be.ย I later use this as a guide for adding my stitches during the texturing process.
Next was the agonizing task of trying to place my UV Maps and such.ย Once I got those the way I wanted them and as straight as possible, I moved on to the texturing phase which arguably takes me quite a long time when it comes to denim.ย When it comes to jeans or denim of any kind, it is never the skinning part that stresses me out.ย I spend a considerable amount of time obsessing over how the material is going to look.
Once I had the capris good to go, it was semi smooth sailing getting to the tube top.ย I had spent the majority of my efforts on the heart buckle and was able to easily bring that into the tube top.ย With some careful placement of the fabric, I was able to achieve the look I desired.
And then on to the fun part… sculpting!
I don’t know what it is, but for me, sculpting in wrinkles is one of my favorite things to do!
Just like with the capris, I take the same steps with the tube top.ย Everything was going gravy until it came down to the skinning of the top and dealing with monster boobs.ย Step with me and take a look behind the curtain of what we have to deal with when it comes to trying to make tops fit all sizes and shapes. Once all the rigging and resizing for all the bodies is finished, I tend to take a step back and revisit all the texture ideas I had.ย I wanted to change up the denim a bit and offer a floral pack and that is where the trouble really started.ย The idea of offering changeable cuffs was appealing… but then the idea of having plaid cuffs came up as well.ย Speaking from experience, one has to be very careful going down that rabbit hole.ย This is how we wound up with 36 designs for the capris and 48 designs for the tube top (because the tube top has to match the capris right?!ย ๐คฃ)
